Do Not Remove Covers or PanelsThere are no user-serviceable parts within the unit. Removal of the top cover will expose dangerous voltages. To avoid personal injury, do not remove the top cover. Do not operate the unit without the cover installed. Power SourceThis product is intended to operate from a power source that will not apply more than 230 volts rms between the supply conductors or between both supply conductor and ground. A protective ground connection by way of grounding conductor in the power cord is essential for safe operation. Grounding the Product This product is grounded through the grounding conductor of the power cord. To avoid electrical shock, plug the power cord into a properly wired receptacle before connecting to the product input or output terminals. Building Branch Circuit Protection: For 115 V use 20 A, for 230 V use 8 A. Intoduction Applications HELM 5 INTRODUCTION The Helm multi screen presentation controller is designed for simple integration and control of up to four Omni Navigators for various multiple display applications. The Helm Controller allows complete control of all of the Omni Navigator’s standard effects of various wipes, fades, cuts, and dissolves. The unit also allows set-up and control of the Picture-in-Picture and Luminance Key effects. There are built-in controls for single & multi-screen effects that can be triggered automatically or manually via the push buttons or the integrated T-Bar Controller. The T-Bar Controller also allows for manual control of the speed and duration of all of the effects. The Helm controls up to four Omni Navigator High Resolution Seamless Switchers which are designed to simplify the task of supporting professional quality video presentations. These units combine a video router, two video scalers, and a full-featured control panel in a single integrated package. The Omni Navigators have eight universal inputs that accept composite video, s-video, component, and computer video sources (640x480 VGA to 1600x1200 UXGA). The input video is converted directly to the native resolution of the projection device to optimize image quality. The Omni Navigators are ideal for use whenever multiple video sources must be switched to provide a professional quality presentation. The operators can transition seamlessly between any of the eight different input sources. Should you have any questions regarding the operation of this unit, please consult the factory. APPLICATIONS Multiple screen staging events Corporate training centers Churches Multiple screen video teleconferencing installations Auditoriums Multi-purpose rooms Education Corporate boardrooms Conventions & traveling presentations 6 HELM 2 CHAPTER 2 INSTALLATION • Cable and component installation and set-up HELM 7 CABLE AND COMPONENT INSTALLATION AND SET- UP (Refer to Diagram on Page 10) SOURCE CABLE ROUTING: • Connect the source output to the distribution amplifier inputs. Eight ( 8 ) sources are possible. Connect the distribution amplifier output from Source 1 to Input 1 on each of the Omni Navigator Inputs. (Up to four ON-2000 Navigators are possible). Connect the distribution amplifier output from Source 2 to Input 2 on each of the Omni Navigator Inputs. Follow this procedure to complete the remainder of the source cabling. Up to eight 1x4-distribution amplifiers may be required. Set up all the Navigators’ Input Files identically. • • • • OUTPUT CABLING: Each Navigator is equipped with a HD-15 MAIN Output, 5 BNC ( RGBHV ) MAIN Output, and an HD-15 PREVIEW Output connector. Output cable termination will vary due to display type and configuration. General cabling instructions are as follows: • The MAIN Program display(s) is connected to either the HD-15 or 5 BNC connector on the Navigators. • The PREVIEW display is connected to the HD-15 PREVIEW Output on the ON-2000 Navigators. COMMUNICATIONS CABLING: • Connect the 4 pin XLR to 4 pin Phoenix style connector from the ON-HELM to the HELM-INT. RS-232 CABLING: • Connect a DB-9 (Female) to DB-25 (Male) serial cable from the COM 1 output on the HELM-INT to the DB-25 (Female) on the first Omni Navigator remote input. This is usually the first unit going Left to Right facing the screens. Connect the other three COM port cables to their respective Navigators’ remote inputs. HELM • 8 NOTE: All of the ON-2000 OMNI NAVIGATOR RS-232 COMMUNICATION PARAMETERS should be set to 38.4K Baud Rate, 8 Data Bits, 1 Stop Bit, and No (None) Parity in the serial port configuration menu on each Navigator. (This is the OMNI’s default setting) See the ON-2000 Omni Navigator Manual for details. NOTE: The COM 5 and COM 6 ports on the HELM-INT are disabled and are reserved for future use. POWER CABLING: • • • • Insert the power cords into the IEC connectors on the rear of each Omni. Plug the units into a 117 VAC outlet. Insert the power cord into the IEC connector on the rear of the HELM-INT. Plug into 100-240 VAC, 50 / 60 Hz AC outlet. SYSTEM POWER UP: • Power up all of the ON-2000 Omni Navigators and the HELM simultaneously via a switch or power strip. If this method is not used the Omni Navigators should be powered up first and be completely initialized before applying power to the HELM. NOTE: Confirm the correct OMNI Navigator Software. It should read REV 25.00B or higher for correct operation. • • • Turn the power switch on for the ON-HELM. Plug in and power up all sources, distribution amplifiers, and displays in the system. It is recommended that you read the manual and understand the operation of the Omni Navigator (ON - 2000) before continuing. The HELM is designed to control all of the Omni's functions to provide a seamless control of single and multi-screen presentations. The HELM can control up to four Omni's with synchronized transition effects. SETUP Group: The Setup Buttons are used to change the user selectable effects. TRANS TIME: controls the transition duration for Auto -Trans transitions. TRANS EDGE: controls wipe edge sharpness for Auto -Trans & T-Bar transitions. KEY: controls the Luminance Level for Key Mode operation. PIP: controls the Picture-in-Picture window size & location for use in the PIP Operation. 12 HELM 2. WIPE SELECT: The Wipe Select buttons are used in the Normal Operational Mode to select one of the available wipe effects, and in the Setup Mode as directional data entry buttons. The Main Output Select buttons are used to indicate the current input source selection(s). If a selection button is pressed, a fast cut to that input source will be initiated. 3. MAIN OUTPUT: 4. PREVIEW SELECT: Preview Select buttons are used to select the next input source(s) to be transitioned to, they also indicate the current preview input selection(s). DISPLAY: In the normal mode of operation, the input source for each screen is displayed. In setup mode a numeric value displayed. Screen 1 - 4 and the ALL buttons select which display is selected. (Note: Feedback from all the selected screens or Navigators is displayed simultaneously) The Key button enables or disables the ON-2000’s Key Mode of operation. This mode is used to overlay the Preview Source(s) onto the Main Screen(s). This effect will take place on the next transition. The PIP button enables or disables the ON-2000’s picture in picture mode of operation. This mode is used to insert a smaller preview image(s) onto the main screen(s). When enabled the preview screen will display the reduced image. The new image will be inserted on the next transition. The Preview Freeze button will freeze or unfreeze the preview screen image(s). This allows the user to transition to a frozen image. Push / Push operation. The Main Freeze button will freeze or unfreeze the main screen image(s). The images will unfreeze on the next transition. Push / Push operation. The Synchronized Wipe button selects the transition type used by the Auto Trans and T-Bar functions. Power Input: EIA Power input connection. 14 HELM INITIALIZATION: The AC power to the Helm may be switched on at the same time or after powering all ON2000 Omni Navigators units in the system. Any Navigator units that power up after the Helm may not be recognized and thus require cycling DOWN & UP of the AC power. The Helm unit will flash while it initializes and waits for the Navigators’ to complete their power up sequence. The remote console may be connected or disconnected after the power up initialization was completed. Doing so will cause the Helm system to reset and re-acquire communication to all connected equipment. MANUAL OVERIDE: Due to the complete communications between the Helm and the Omni’s, simultaneous control should be avoided. If dual control is mandatory, special care should be given for the following: Lamp feedback on the Helm may not be synchronized to the Omni’s. Any transition or screen select command from the Helm to the affected Omni will re-synchronize the system. The Wipe button on the Omni’s front panel may not operate: reset the wipe effect by pressing the Effects button on the front panel of the affected Omni Navigator and select a new wipe type. This may also be required the first time the Omni is used as a standalone device. SCREEN CONTROLS: Each ON-2000 Omni Navigator in the system can be communicated with individually or in groups. The buttons labeled SCREEN 1 through 4 correspond to the communication ports on the back of the HELM-INT rack unit and the particular Omni connected to them. Each screen button should be pressed individually to add or remove a screen from the group. The ALL button will group or ungroup all screens. The screen control buttons allow you to set the input source, Keying, and P-I-P individually, before grouping screens for a larger simultaneous transition. LED DISPLAY: The LED display is used for indicating the selected input source for each screen, and for data feedback when in any of the Setup Modes. SOURCE SELECT KEYS: • To select an Input Source for a transition, you must have one or more screens selected. When a single screen is selected, one Main Output Select button will light red and one Preview Select button will light green indicating the status. If multiple screens are selected all of the status information will be overlaid which may cause multiple indicators. HELM 15 • To select a source for the next transition, first select the screen or group of screens desired. Then press the corresponding Input Select button. After the Omni(s) acquire the image and are ready for the next command, the lamp will light green. • To cause an immediate transition on the Main Output(s) of the selected screens, press any Main Output Select button. The Omni(s) will Cut instantly to the new image after the scaler acquires the source. TRANSITION CONTROLS: There are three ways to transition the selected screen’s Preview Image(s) to the Main Output(s). • CUT will perform a glitch free, instantaneous switch from the Preview Image to the Main Output. • AUTO TRAN will perform a transition using the currently selected effect type and rate/speed. • The T-Bar allows the user to manually control the transition rate for the currently selected rate. TRANSITION EFFECTS: There are three direct access transition effect types available, dissolve, wipe, and synchronized wipe. • The DIS button selects the dissolve type for use on the next AUTO TRAN or T-Bar command. • The WIPE button selects a wipe type using the currently selected pattern and rate. When transitioning on multiple screens the wipe occurs simultaneously. • The SYNCRO WIPE button selects a synchronized wipe transition. The synchro nized effect will spread any horizontal wipe effect over all selected screens. If a vertical wipe or mosaic effect is selected a standard wipe will be performed over all selected screens. IMAGE FREEZE: Either the Preview or Main Output Image can be frozen by first selecting the desired screen(s), then pressing the PREV FREZ or MAIN FREZ button. The frozen image(s) will remain frozen until it is deselected by pressing the button a second time TRANSITION TIME: The transition time utilized by the AUTO TRAN button may be changed. Press the TRANS TIME button in the setup area. The UP and DOWN arrows will begin to flash green and the display will show the current setting in seconds. Press the arrow buttons to adjust the time. When the desired time is set, press the TRANS TIME button again, to return to the normal operational mode. 16 HELM TRANSITION EDGE: The wipe transition edge may be changed from 4 to 128 pixels thick. Press the TRANS EDGE button in the setup area. The two dual arrow buttons will begin to flash green and the display will show the current setting. Press the arrow buttons to adjust the edge. When the desired edge is set, press the TRANS EDGE button again, to return to the normal operational mode. KEYING OPERATION: To operate the Omni’s Keying or Luminance Overlay feature the operator should select the desired screen, input source, transition type, and effect. Pressing the button labeled KEY under Transition Controls enables the Key mode. Then to transition, the Key onto the main output a CUT, AUTO TRANS or T-bar command must be used. The next transition will remove the Keyed image and return the Helm to its normal state. NOTE: Keying can only be adjusted on the main screen KEYING SETUP: The Key or Luminance threshold can be adjusted from the Helm. Press the KEY button in the setup button group. The UP and DOWN arrows will begin to flash green and the display will show the current setting. Press the arrow buttons to adjust the threshold. When the desired value is set, press the KEY button again, to return to the normal operational mode. To preview the new setting, you will need to view it on the main screen using the Keying Operation procedure above. P – I – P OPERATION: To operate the Omni’s Picture-in-Picture overlay feature the operator should select the desired screen, input source, transition type, and effect. Pressing the button labeled PIP under the Transition Controls enables the PIP mode and reduces the preview screen image to the current PIP size and location. Then to insert the PIP onto the main output a CUT, AUTO TRANS, or T-bar command must be used. The next transition will remove the PIP image and return it to the preview screen. You may now press the PIP button again to return to the normal mode of operation or select a new source for PIP . P – I – P SET-UP: The picture in picture window size and location can be adjusted from the Helm. To do so, press the PIP button in the setup button group. The eight Wipe Select buttons will begin to flash green. Pressing any of the four arrow buttons to move the PIP image on the screen and display the location data on the display. Pressing any of the dual arrows, mosaic or blank buttons will adjust the PIP image size on the screen and display the size data on the LED display. When all the desired value are set, press the PIP button again, to return to the normal operational mode. HELM 17 4 CHAPTER 4 APPENDIX • • • Regulatory Complliance Warranty Policy Service 18 HELM REGULATORY COMPLIANCE The HELM ON-Helm Multi Screen Presentation Controller has been tested for compliance with: FCC Class A and CE. The Power Adapter has been tested for compliance with: UL, CSA and CE. WARRANTY POLICY This product is warranted against failures due to defective parts or faulty workmanship for a period of one year after delivery to the original owner. During this period, FSR will make any necessary repairs or replace the unit without charge for parts or labor. Shipping charges to the factory or repair station must be prepaid by the owner, return-shipping charges, via UPS / FedEx ground, will be paid by FSR. This warranty applies only to the original owner and is not transferable. In addition, it does not apply to repairs done by other than the FSR factory or Authorized Repair Stations. This warranty shall be cancelable by FSR at its sole discretion if the unit has been subjected to physical abuse or has been modified in any way without written authorization from FSR. FSR’s liability under this warranty is limited to repair or replacement of the defective unit. FSR will not be responsible for incidental or consequential damages resulting from the use or misuse of its products. Some states do not allow the exclusion of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state. Warranty claims should be accompanied by a copy of the original purchase invoice showing the purchase date (if a Warranty Registration Card was mailed in at the time of purchase, this is not necessary). Before returning any equipment for repair, please read the important information on service below. SERVICE Before returning any equipment for repair, please be sure that it is adequately packed and cushioned against damage in shipment, and that it is insured. We suggest that you save the original packaging and use it to ship the product for servicing. Also, please enclose a note giving your name, address, phone number and a description of the problem. NOTE: all equipment being returned for repair must have a Return authorization (RMA) Number. To get a RMA Number, please call the FSR Service Department (973-785-4347). Please display your RMA Number prominently on the front of all packages.
