1. Using Your CameraAperture, Shutter Speed and ISO 2. The Joys of Manual ModeAs more and more people give up their point and shoots fordigital SLR andcompact ILC cameras, they learn the versatilityand creativity afforded byswitching their cameras tomanual mode. 3. The Aspects of Manual ModeWhen you switch your camera into manual mode, you takecontrol of the amount of light that gets let into yourcamera. And in photography, light is everything. 4. ApertureTogether with shutter speed and ISO, your camerasaperture helps control the amount of light that entersyour camera. The smaller the aperture, the larger the opening, and themore light that gets in. 5. Shutter SpeedIf aperture governs the amount oflight that enters the camera, shutter speed controlsthe amount of time that lighthas to reach the camerassensor.Photographers can use a slower shutter speed to slowdown a chaotic scene, and a higher shutter speed tocapture action shots. 6. ISOISO is the number that regulates a cameras lightsensitivity. The lower the ISO, the lower the lightsensitivity; the higher the ISO, the higher the lightsensitivity.Higher ISOs enable the camerato capture images in low lightwithout the use of a flash.Note: ISO can be tricky. Dialit up too far, and you increasethe likelihood that yourphotos will appear grainy. 7. So, Whats the Perfect Setting?Unfortunately, there is no aperture-shutter-speed-ISOsweet spot. Light conditions, subject variabilities, andyour purpose for the photo will determine whichcombination you use.If you let too much light in, for example, you willoverexpose your image; dont let enough light in, andyour image will be underexposed. 8. Our Advice? Play. Its important to play around in with your camera. Treat itlike a musical instrument. You would never expect topick up a guitar and play it perfectly the first time. Thesame is true with photography. So, practice, remembering that youre not capturing images, yourecapturing light. 9. Using Manual ModeReady to play?
