I wanted to honor this young mans life and love for music with a celebratory piece rather than an elegy. The tune itself follows an ABAC format with the chorale sections at the beginning and close of the piece utilizing the melodic and harmonic material of the C section. The opening chorale section should be played as legato as possible with care taken to balance the melody (trumpets), counter melody (alto and tenor saxes) and accompaniment (baritone sax and trombones). Here, the accompaniment instruments should be equal volume to create a lush foundation. At measure 9, the drums set the tempo and change the mood of the piece. A small group of Alto Sax1, Guitar and Vibes (optional) present the A theme beginning in measure 13. The drums begin a cross-stick groove reminiscent of Birdland at measure 14. The feel changes to a bossa nova with a 2-3 clave pattern in the drums at measure 22. The feel changes back to utilize the crossstick pattern in the drums again at measure 30 with the full ensemble joining in. The groove changes back to the bossa nova feel at measure 38.The open solo section at measure 50 has room for Alto Sax 1, guitar and/or piano. This solo section could also feature other horn players if you wish. The previously mentioned changes in style from the rhythm section should occur during the form of this solo section. Measure 87 begins a development section with a piano figure which becomes the foundation for this section. When the alto and tenor saxophones enter the second time at measure 95, these players should be careful to play the A concert as legato as possible and with as little space as possible for the desired effect. The development section leads to a brief saxophone unison soli which leads into the peak point of the piece, the final A section at measure 118. The ending choral at measure 131 begins with just Alto Sax 1 and piano and adds more winds as it progresses. This chorale should be played in a similar style as the beginning of the piece. You may note that, while the piece wants to resolve to F major, the only F major chord is the final chord.I hope you enjoy this piece,Mike KamufInstrumentation List1 Alto Sax 11 Alto Sax 21 Tenor Sax 11 Tenor Sax 21 Baritone Sax1 Trumpet 11 Trumpet 21 Trumpet 31 Trumpet 41 Trombone 11 Trombone 21 Trombone 31 Trombone 41 Guitar1 Piano1 Bass1 Drums1 VibesZB4192SAMPLE&&&&&&&&&????&&??/&# ## #### #####bbbbbbbbb44444444444444444444444444444444444444Alto Sax 1Alto Sax 2Tenor Sax 1Tenor Sax 2Baritone SaxTrumpet 1Trumpet 2Trumpet 3Trumpet 4Trombone 1Trombone 2Trombone 3Trombone 4GuitarPianoBassDrumsVibesSustained, Legato q =80FFFFIn StandIn StandIn StandIn Stand 3 333wwww b1FFFFFFFFFwwwww 3 3 3 3wwwwb2. # n 3. # n 3. # n 3. # n 33 n # n # n # n #n n n n wbw #4 N 3 N 3 N 3 N 3wwwwwwwwwN5 3 3 3 36Too Soon to Go Composed by Mike KamufConductorApprox.
