Using ICT in teaching and learning

By:Sanaa Fatima

What is ICT?ICT stands for Information and Communication Technology.

The concepts, methods and applications involved in ICT are constantly evolving on an almost daily basis. Its difficult to keep up with the changes because they happen so fast. While teaching our main focus is on the following three words behind ICT:- INFORMATION- COMMUNICATIONS and- TECHNOLOGY A good way to think about ICT is to consider all the uses of digital technology that already exist to help individuals and organizations to get information.

ICT in Education. The creative use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in education has the capacity to increase the quality of learner's lives by enhancing teaching and learning. In this presentation, the term ICT, includes computers, computer networking (the Internet and intranet), peripheral devices and multimedia, and the range of assistive technologies available for learners either in the form of CD or online.

Types of technology we currently have in our schoolWe are currently use the following technologies in our school: Computers Multimedia/ ProjectorDigital cameras

What we are using?ICT always help shape the learning outcomes of the learners, it always motivates and encourages them, make them responsible, autonomous and gives them ownership of their work. When Im talk about the learners of our section Id say that they deprive this autonomy, power and ownership, because they are not the regular practitioners of ICT as we dont own any lab.

Embedding technologies to enhance teaching and learning. The following technology tools Id like to recommend for my section, as they are cost effective and can be easily used and understood by teachers and learners. Their selection wont put the management in jeopardy.

Embedding software technologies to enhance teaching and learning. (cont.) Classroom BlogPowerPointWord DocumentsOnline Video StreamingStorybird

Classroom BlogValue of classroom blogsGreat for the beginning of the yeargetting information to parents and studentsEngaging learners in various discussions.allows learner to participate in another way other than in class.follow through with lesson at homeeliminates excuses for not knowing homeworkPossible ways to use blogsPosting homeworkfollow up discussion on a book or lessonBuilding on new vocabularysharing ideasasking classmates questions or for help on a lesson/homeworkclassroom announcements

What about the learners who dont have the facility of computer or internet or are not allowed to use them?8

Blogs in an ICT ClassroomAllows teacher to assess students in a different wayGives students who hesitate to speak in class an opportunity to participate in a less threatening wayProvides follow up at homeEngages students and encourages them to write without feeling like they are writing.

How a teacher can assess learners via blogs?9

PowerPoint in ICT

PowerPoint in an ICT ClassroomGreat for introducing new vocabulary (definition, picture, examples, etc.)Addresses the needs of visual learnersHelps students who cant see the boardChange font/color of slides it will save time and is helpful to address student needs.

Microsoft Word

Word Documents in an ICT ClassroomGraphic Organizers/Worksheets/Quizzes/TestsStudents typing their class work instead of writing Engaging in activitiesGreat for Kinesthetic learnersHelps learners focusGreat for learners who struggle with fine motor skills/handwriting

Online Video Streaming

Online Video StreamingThere are several video streaming sites which allows the teacher to show content related videos in class

Educational Video Streaming Sites include: United Streaming www.unitedstreaming.comTeacher Tube www.teachertube.comPower Media Plus www.powermediaplus.comAnd many more are available on net.

Online Video Streaming in an ICT ClassroomShort video clips significantly enhance a lessonAddress the needs of visual/auditory learnersHelps students who have low reading levels learn content, yet is engaging to all students

Web 2.0 technology Storybird.comStory and poetry writing software for English language.Self generated class for activities. Can be integrated with Art Stories can be made with the help of given pictures. It gives the opportunity to develop the writing skills and expression in creative writing tasks.

Embedding hardware technologies to enhance teaching and learning. (cont.) Podcasting

SMART board/Interactive Whiteboard

PodcastingA podcast is essentially the modern version of tape recordingPodcasting allows users to record information which is later turned into an MP3 fileThese MP3 files can be listened on computer or uploaded to a class blog.

Podcasting in an ICT ClassroomVery user-friendly; students can record their own podcasts with a few quick clicks of the buttons allowing the majority of this activity to be student-centered.Addresses the needs of auditory and kinesthetic learnersSynthesizes information

Podcasting in an ICT Classroom cont.Assesses student knowledge orallyAllows students to teach one anotherGreat for mixed ability groupsProvides opportunities to learners with Speech and Language Impairments to practice speakingIt is also good for peer or group assessment

Interactive Whiteboard

SMART Board/ Interactive WhiteboardConnects to your computer to create a giant touch screen computer combined with an electronic whiteboardAllows teachers and students to interact with the whiteboard to teach and participate in lesson activities

To use this hardware tool is there any special kind of skill required by the teachers?26

SMART Boards in an ICT ClassroomEngages studentsAddresses the needs of Visual and Kinesthetic LearnersAllows students to teach one another

Decision All our efforts in generating the learning outcomes with ICT can come true by using the above recommended software and hardware tool, but the one factor that is missing is we need to avail computer lab more often, so our learners can have hands on experience and will be benefited by the technology tools available around them.

What will be the benefits for the institution?28

Thank you for your precious time
