Emma Bates

Born in the bustling streets of Elk River, Minnesota, Emma Bates transformed early high-school restlessness into stepping stones toward unimaginable greatness. From a young age she ran constantly-her competitive nature showing early in gym class mile races. She attended Elk River High School, before enrolling at Boise State University, where she became a 12-time NCAA All-American and in June 2014 captured the NCAA Division I women's 10,000-metre championship in a time of 32:32.35, the second-fastest mark in meet history.

Beyond her collegiate advances, Bates turned professional in July 2015 when she joined the Boston Athletic Association high-performance team and then later moved her training to Boulder, Colorado under coach Joe Bosshard and the Team Boss group.

A key aspect of her later life was battling injuries that threatened to derail her momentum-most notably a partial plantar-fascia tear suffered after the 2023 Chicago Marathon that cost her a shot at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials.
