Born on 28 August 1983 in Waitara, New Zealand, McAlister's early years were spent in Manchester, England, where his father, Charlie McAlister, played professional rugby league. During this time, Luke was a member of the Manchester United Academy, showcasing his early athletic prowess. Returning to New Zealand, he attended Westlake Boys High School and quickly rose through the ranks, debuting for North Harbour in 2002 and the Blues in Super Rugby in 2004. At just 21, he made his All Blacks debut against the British and Irish Lions in 2005, marking the beginning of a distinguished international career. McAlister's versatility on the field allowed him to excel as a fly-half, centre, and fullback. He was part of the All Blacks squad for the 2007 Rugby World Cup and played a pivotal role in their Tri-Nations victories in 2005, 2006, and 2007. In 2007, he made a bold move to Sale Sharks in England, becoming one of the first All Blacks to play in Europe during the professional era.
