Every generation has its pioneers - for Serbia in athletics during the 2010s and 2020s, that beacon of innovation was undoubtedly Marija Vučenović. Born on April 3, 1993, in Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, Vučenović emerged as a formidable javelin thrower, representing her country on the global stage. Her early career was marked by significant achievements, including bronze medals at the 2012 World Junior Championships and the 2013 European U23 Championships. These accolades set the tone for a promising trajectory in the sport. Transitioning to collegiate athletics, Vučenović joined the University of Florida's track and field team, the Florida Gators, where she continued to excel. Notably, she secured two NCAA runner-up finishes in the javelin throw in 2013 and 2017, and clinched the SEC Outdoor Championship in 2013.
