Paretos Garden Vilfredo Pareto (1848-1923) A controversialengineer - economist - sociologist whosework included the then little known law ofincome distribution, now known as the80/20 principle. 4. Paretos Law ofDistribution 80% of the wealth is produced and possessedby only 20% of the population. 5. 80/20 Outside of Economics Pareto also noticed, among other things, that80% of his garden peas were produce by only20% of the pea pods he had planted. 6. Other Applications 80% of the Outputs come from 20% of theinputs. 80% of the consequences flow from 20% of thecauses 80% of the results come from 20% of the time andeffort 80% of Company profits come from 20% of theproducts and customers 80% of Stock Market gains come from 20% of theinvestors and 20% of the portfolio 7. Ratio is often more severe It is not uncommon to see: 90/10 95/5 99/1 8. How can we use this to bemore effective? Which 20% of sources are causing 80% ofyour problems and unhappiness? Which 20% of sources are resulting in 80% ofyour desired outcomes and happiness? 9. Which 20%, 10% or 5% ofyour customers are causing80%, 90% or 95% of yourgrief? Ask yourselfhonestly: Are they really worth it really? How badly would it affect your income if yougot rid of them? 10. A large percentage of thetime, a maximum ofheartache can be eliminatedwith a minimum of incomeloss. If you CAN get rid of, fire, or reassign acustomer or project that has an inverted griefto income ratio .. 11. JUST DO IT!! 12. Still Other Applications Advertising Affiliates Partners Personal Relationships 13. Parkinsons Law Have you ever heard someone say I workbetter under a deadline? This is Parkinsons Law in action 14. Parkinsons Law States: A task will swell in perceived importance inreverse proportion to the amount of time youhave to complete it. If something must be done by tomorrow,we will put off other items to see that the taskis completed. If it is not needed for two months, we hardlythink of it for seven weeks. 15. How to be Uber effective:Combine ParetosDistribution withParkinsons Law Limit tasks to the important to shorten worktime (80/20) Shorten work time to limit tasks to theimportant (Parkinsons Law) 16. Identify the few criticaltasks that contribute mostto income and then schedulethem with very short andclear deadlines 17. The Kobayashi Maru This was a test given by Star Fleet tocommand candidates. It thrust the studentinto a no-win situation to see how they wouldrespond. There was no right or wrong choice, but thedecision made by the student, whichundesirable outcome they chose, revealed agreat deal about the students makeup 18. Why is this relevant? James Tiberius Kirk, the venerable captain ofthe Starship Enterprise 1701-A, didnt likeknowing that he was going to be put into alose-lose situation. He believed that there were alwaysalternatives, other ways to approach theproblem, other choices besides what you aregiven. 19. WDKD? He secretly gained access to the simulationcomputer before his test and reprogrammedthe Kobayashi Maru so that it was no longer ano win scenario. He changed the rules of the game to work forhis benefit. 20. Whats our lesson? What is it we believe about how we shouldspend our days and how many hours weshould put in because those are the rulesweve been given? Are we doing work that a clerk or an assistantcould be doing? Are we inventing tasks so that we can trickourselves into thinking that we are beingproductive? 21. Change the rules!! We need not accept someone elsesdescription of what it means to beproductive. Use the 80/20 Principle to determine whatyou should be doing, with whom, and when. Overlay Parkinsons Law to optimize how todo it in the most effective manner and in theshortest possible time. 22. 80/20 (ON STEROIDS) Gary Keller. The ONE Thing 23. I want you to go small by identifying the 20percent, and then I want you to go evensmaller by finding the vital few of the vitalfew. Keep going. You can actually take 20 percentof the 20 percent of the 20 percent andcontinue until you get to the single mostimportant thing! 24. A To Do List 25. The One Thing 26. BIG IDEASGo small. Dont focus on being busy; focus on being productive. Allowwhat matters most to drive your day.Go extreme. Once youve figured out what actually matters, keepasking what matters most until there is only one thing left. That coreactivity goes at the top of your success list.Say no. Whether you say later or never, the point is to say not nowto anything else you could do until your most important work is done.(60/60/30)Dont get trapped in the check off game. If we believe things dontmatter equally, we must act accordingly. We cant fall prey to the notionthat everything has to be done, that checking things off our list is whatsuccess is all about. We cant be trapped in a game of check off thatnever produces a winner. The truth is that things dont matter equallyand success is found in doing what matters most.
